Multilayered and dark but uneven and somewhat soulless combination of unusual superheroes, political and social commentary, philosophical themes, and a peculiar visual style; partly an amalgamation of elements from Sin City and The Fountain. Noteworthy opening credits, and the twist on the monologuing/villain speech at the end of the movie is amusingly clever. The love triangle between Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, and Dr. Manhattan is unconvincing and feels contrived. With the exception of Jackie Earle Haley’s intense portrayal of Rorschach, the most interesting character in the movie, there are no standout performances, but the actors do an adequate job of bringing their characters to life. Very appropriate music. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore.
