“Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) movie poster

Speaking more to the heart than to the brain, this film is thoroughly compelling, emotionally overwhelming, exuberantly energetic, touching, violent, exciting, humorous, and ultimately uplifting. Everything fits perfectly together, creating a marvelously structured whole that is more than the sum of its parts and an immensely satisfying cinematic experience. The movie ends with a wonderful song-and-dance number featuring the excellent song Jai Ho. Top-notch acting; Dev Patel charismatically portrays the instantly likeable Jamal Malik; Madhur Mittal masters the difficult role of Salim; Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan are solid; the non-professional child actors give natural and convincing performances. Brilliant direction by Danny Boyle. The stunning cinematography, the deft editing, and the irresistible and memorable score create a strong atmosphere that immerses the viewer in the movie. Based on the book Q & A by Vikas Swarup.
