An effective, atmospheric, taut, unpredictable, and disturbing horror thriller based on a story by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont, The Mist uses otherworldly creatures as a catalyst to show what human beings are capable of doing to each other when we are overcome by fear and paranoia. The ending, which features the haunting song The Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance, is unexpectedly unconventional and unforgettable. Some of the character interactions and reactions are unconvincing, but the characters are sufficiently believable, despite not being very well developed. Marcia Gay Harden gives a forceful, memorable performance as Mrs. Carmody. The black-and-white director’s version of The Mist is neither better nor worse than the theatrical release, but it has a different feel to it and is worth seeing, even if one has already seen the original version.
