With the exception of a few poignant scenes, this thematically ambitious but narratively challenged, often overly unsubtle, and borderline pretentious film does not leave a lasting impression. Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams are solid but unremarkable in the lead roles; as a mother and her eldest son, Marife Necesito and Jan David G. Nicdao give very good, natural performances that elevate the film. Written and directed with attention to detail by Lukas Moodysson. Beautiful cinematography, especially the sequences that are set in Thailand and the Philippines. Nice and appropriate score.
