This fairly engaging movie contains some exciting sequences, such as the well-staged and convincing one in which an airplane lands on the Strip in Las Vegas, and has its humorous moments. With a fast-paced story and a running time of 115 minutes, Con Air does not outstay its welcome. On the negative side are the clich├ęd characters and scenes, and, to a lesser extent, the expectedly superficial and ridiculous plot.

Directed by Simon West, who gets the job done—nothing more, nothing less. Despite the crisp cinematography and the warm colors, the film’s visuals are unremarkable. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama is the only memorable piece on the bland but adequate soundtrack.

Nicolas Cage and John Cusack are okay in their roles. John Malkovich’s and Steve Buscemi’s performances leave a lasting impression. It is nice to see Dave Chappelle in a small role.
