Set in Santiago, Chile, in 1973, this very human story of the friendship between two teenage boys from different social classes is touching and engaging, well acted, and, towards the end, disturbing. Matías Quer and Ariel Mateluna are convincing as Gonzalo Infante and Pedro Machuca, respectively, the two central characters, both of which are easy to connect with and care about. There is a scene that is reminiscent of a similar scene in Dead Poets Society, but it is not as powerful as the scene in the 1989 movie. Machuca never feels contrived or predictable, and it gives an honest and interesting glimpse into life in Chile in the days surrounding General Augusto Pinochet’s violent military coup against President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973.
