The story of a female judge fighting corruption and embezzlement in a business-political world controlled by elderly men has potential, but the movie is not engaging because of the way the story is handled. Judge Jeanne Charmant-Killman (Isabelle Huppert), also known as “the Piranha”, is uncompromisingly tough when she is working but vulnerable in her private life, which makes for an interesting character. Slow-paced and genre-confused (is it a thriller or a satire?), the movie is more of a character study than it is about the case that Charmant-Killman is working on. The strongest scenes are those in which the judge confronts the men in power, whereas the scenes in which the top dogs meet to discuss the situation while smoking oversized cigars are the weakest.
