When I went to see this movie my expectations were high since Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a great movie. Maybe my expectations were the reason I didn’t find this movie quite as good as the first one, although I think the more likely explanation is that this movie doesn’t quite reach the level of the previous one.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest doesn’t have a “real” ending and therefore doesn’t feel like a complete movie. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing: it makes me really want to see the third movie to find out what happens and how the adventure ends. Regardless of how one feels about the ending of this movie, the cliffhanger is a bit annoying and at the same time undeniably quite effective.

Since I knew beforehand that there was a short sequence following the end credits, I decided to stick around to see what it was. Not many people did that, however: by the time the sequence played there were only two other persons watching the screen. The sequence in question is in the same style as the one in the first movie and not that noteworthy, but a nice treat anyway. This was actually the first time I have stayed in a theater for the entire end credits.

The acting is very good, and the special effects are great. The soundtrack is, as far as I could hear, very similar to the one in the previous movie, but I think the music was one of the strengths of the first movie so that is not an issue for me. The villains, with the exception of Davy Jones, are not as cool as the ones in the first movie, and the plot is so-so. Much of the magic of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is lacking. All in all, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is an enjoyable movie, but it neither tops nor equals the original.
