There is something special with this movie. I have seen it many times, but it is just as thrilling every time I see it, even though I know what is going to happen in the movie. Only really great movies can do that.

When I saw Jaws the first time, it really affected me: I felt uncomfortable keeping my feet on the floor, and that feeling lingered for quite some time after the end credits had rolled. Few movies have affected me in such a tangible way, and that is probably one part of the explanation of why this movie works so well for me.

Jaws is not flawless, but on the whole it is a very effective thriller/horror/adventure movie with a potent atmosphere and believable characters. John Williams’ well-known score is quite simple but it works perfectly in the movie, perhaps because of its simplicity. The shark gets relatively little screen time, and that is another strength of this movie. Spielberg wisely uses only what he needs and nothing else, and Jaws is yet another good example of the saying “less is more.”
